$20,000 Winning Design Selected From More Than 800 Entries

NEW YORK, July 30, 2009 – LG Electronics MobileComm U.S.A. Inc. (LG Mobile Phones) named Emily Albinski from Wading River, N.Y. the winner of its second annual “Design the Future” Competition.

The idea competition challenges participants to create a concept to define the future of personal mobile communication.  More than 800 designs were submitted in the 2009 competition for more than $80,000 in awards.  LG awarded $20,000 to the first place winner, $10,000 to second place and $5,000 to third place.  LG also presented 40 honorable mentions of $1,000 plus an LG mobile phone.

First place winner Albinski, a freelance designer, created the CC on the theme of connectivity. The winning concept of a modular phone, which could be used by LG in the future, includes a “core” phone that can be inserted into a touch screen or netbook shell depending on the user’s needs.  By design, the winning concept would allow users to connect in many different contexts and environments. Albinski, a science and technology enthusiast, refined and laid out her concept in just four days. In 2008, she participated in the challenge and submitted a USB necklace in the LG Swarovski Crystal Vision design contest.

“Where better to get inspired than from the imaginations of mobile phone users, ranging from students to professionals,” said Ehtisham Rabbani, vice president of product strategy and marketing for LG Mobile Phones. “With these priceless submissions, LG not only gets closer to the future of this industry, but gets to share in the thrill of discovering it with our consumers as a guiding light.”

Many of the design concepts submitted demonstrate the desire to stay connected and multi-task in a wearable option. One honorable mention concept – titled Morph – featured a touch screen phone with a flexible display that can be bent and worn around the wrist.  Another honorable mention concept – the HiFi – included a touch screen phone that can be converted into a hands-free headphone for listening to music and making calls.

This year’s competition featured more awards and attracted a record number of submissions from design enthusiasts. Entries were judged on four categories: need fulfillment, creativity/originality, feasibility and polish and appeal. Any U.S. resident over the age of 18 years (or age of majority in state of residence) and older was eligible to submit a concept. Both seasoned and aspiring designers used their imagination, creativity and 2D and 3D engineering software such as the free trial of SketchBook Pro provided by partner Autodesk to create their designs.  Award submissions were accepted from April 20, 2009 to June 7, 2009 and were submitted online through crowdSPRING, a partner for this competition.

22 Contestants to Compete, Following National Selection Process, for the Chance to Win $50,000 and Bragging Rights for a Lifetime!

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. June 15, 2009 – LG Electronics MobileComm U.S.A., Inc. (LG Mobile Phones) is looking for the quickest thumbs in the country. On Tuesday June 16, 2009, one person will be named the LG U.S. National Texting Champion, following in the footsteps of the winners from the past two years.  The winner of the third annual LG U.S. National Texting Championship will receive $50,000.

LG concluded a national promotion in May to find 22 finalists, known as the Text Titans. With over 250,000 game plays, the promotion involved online facebook challenges, wild card play that utilized SMS texting, and competitions on MTV.  The Text Titans received all expense paid trips to New York City where they will endure a grueling two-day marathon designed to push their texting skills to the absolute limit. An immediate and brutal “Text Attack” speed game will separate the texting pretenders from the contenders the first day of the competition. The survivors will then compete in a series of daunting text challenges testing their speed, dexterity, nerves, athleticism and text knowledge. The three players who stave off elimination of the challenges will participate in a mysterious final qualifying challenge. Ultimately, two finalists will emerge. This duo will compete in a speed texting mini tournament with the winner taking the LG U.S. National Texting Championship crown.

“The LG National Texting Championship is bigger and better than ever,” said Ehtisham Rabbani, vice president of product strategy & marketing for LG Mobile Phones. “Every year, we challenge ourselves to make this an even more exciting event, and for the third annual Championship we chose to increase the difficulty, the duration, and the drama. Contestants will be pushed to the limit as they fight to win the $50,000 purse, the title, and bragging rights for a lifetime. As the leading manufacturer of texting devices, we know our fervent fans will not be disappointed.”

The third annual LG U.S. National Championship will take place over two days, with the final round and crowning of the winner taking place in New York on June 16, 2009 at NEP Studios 407 West 7th Avenue (entrance located on 33rd Street btw 6th & 7th Avenue) New York, NY 10001.  During the competition, players will compete in various challenges while typing in phrases on their LG handsets exactly as they appear on nearby LG plasma screens with no typos or abbreviations, trying to be quicker than their opponents. The competition starts off with 22 contestants who will go through a “Text Attack” round, resulting in 6 contestants that will endure the various challenges to try survive each ensuing round of texting play.  The three top contestants will compete in a final qualifying round, resulting in two contestants who will fight to be crowned the LG U.S. National Texting Champion in the traditional style of the competition, a speed tournament.

The LG U.S. National Texting Championship began in 2007, when LG first searched for the fastest thumbs in the U.S.  Contestants battled each other for $25,000 in cash and prizes. Although over 500 competitors thought their thumbs could out-text the best, 13-year-old Morgan Pozgar was the winner.  Pozgar’s winning phrase was, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocios! Even though the sound of it is something quite atrocious. If you say it loud enough you’ll always sound precocious,” earning her the title of LG National Texting Champion and $25,000 cash.

The second annual LG National Texting Championship took place in 2008, when it kicked off with preliminary rounds throughout the country, including regional competitions, a Wild Card play and a TV Micro event.  The fastest texters from the various preliminary rounds came together to participate in a grueling battle of the thumbs.  Beating more than 15,000 entrants, Nathan Schwartz, a 20-year-old Clyde, Ohio resident, took home the title, and $50,000 in prize money and indisputable bragging rights for his speed-texting skills with the phrase ““Does everybody here know the alphabet? Let’s text. Here it goes… AbcDeFghiJKlmNoPQrStuvWXy & Z! Now I know my A-B-C’s, next time won’t you text with me?”

LG Mobile Phones Creates Integrated, Multi-Media Marketing Campaign for “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”

Movie Tie-In Features TV Spot Directed by Michael Bay, Film-Themed Micro Site and Games, Interactive In-Store Promotion and Special Edition LG Versa

LOS ANGELES, June 16, 2009 - LG Electronics MobileComm U.S.A. Inc. (LG Mobile Phones), in partnership with upcoming film, “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”  from DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures in association with Hasbro, is launching a comprehensive multi-discipline marketing campaign tied to the highly anticipated summer film.

The tie-in campaign includes a customized television commercial directed by “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” director Michael Bay. An in-store consumer promotion with Verizon Wireless will also kick off nationwide. The promotion allows consumers to enter a sweepstakes automatically when they send Friends and Family® one of three pre-recorded phone messages from Optimus Prime®. In addition, LG launched a movie-themed micro site, www.uncoverlg.com, which includes an engaging and interactive online game. To round out the already compelling campaign, LG announced earlier this year at CTIA their limited edition Versa for the movie tie-in. The phone will be available only through consumer promotions.

“Fully integrated programs give us the capacity to reach our consumers where it matters most,” said Ehtisham Rabbani, vice president of product strategy and marketing for LG Mobile Phones.  “Working with the studio on a high profile film franchise like Transformers provides us another rewarding opportunity to create a partnership that relates different types of technology in our consumers’ lives and imaginations.  We share in the enthusiasm around these cutting-edge movies and value their ability to entertain while LG brings the stories to reality.”

“This LG campaign with Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is a best-in-class example of a brand effectively leveraging the assets of a movie,” commented LeeAnne Stables, executive vice president of worldwide marketing partnerships for Paramount Pictures. “They have creatively aligned their product with the excitement building around the film while delivering benefit to the LG brand in the marketplace.”

In addition to the multi- element marketing campaign, LG will also participate in the U.S. premiere of the film in Los Angeles on June 22 as the presenting sponsor of the event.

Advertising Campaign
To promote the film and its involvement, LG created a 30-second TV spot, which features the LG Versa and two characters from the movie: Optimus Prime® and a Decepticon®. Peter Cullen, known as the voice of Optimus Prime®, provided the voiceover for the LG commercial. The ad began appearing on national TV (network and cable programming) and in cinemas nationwide on June 1, 2009. The company also created a print ad featuring the LG Versa.

Limited Edition Phone
A limited edition version of the new LG Versa was created to promote the film and will be available through in-store and online promotions.  The phone has been modified inside and out and includes the following limited edition features:

  • Optimus Prime® voice tones (exclusively recorded by Peter Cullen)
  • Ring tones (provided by Glu Mobile)
  • Wall papers (provided by Glu Mobile)
  • The original “Transformers” film on a pre-loaded microSD™ card
  • Specially designed case resembling the “allspark cube” from the film

LG Micro Site
LG has developed a micro site that gives movie fans a much richer and deeper experience than the usual movie tie-in website. In addition to information about the LG Versa and full access to “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen®” digital content, consumers can enter a sweepstakes and download a video game for their mobile phones. Also, there is an online game where fans can participate in an exciting game using the latest 3D graphics and interactive phone technology. The site can be visited at www.uncoverlg.com.

In-Store Promotion
Further leveraging its association with the film, LG created an in-store consumer promotion for Verizon Wireless to drive awareness for LG phones at the retail level. Verizon customers can call a toll-free number – or log on to uncoverlg.com – to send one of three pre-recorded messages to their friends and family that feature the voice of Optimus Prime®. When consumers make the call to send the messages to their friends and family, they are automatically entered to win in a sweepstakes. As the grand prize, one winner will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Los Angeles to attend a screening of “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.” The winner will also receive 10 LG phones for friends and family, a 55-inch LG television, and an LG Blu-Ray disc home theatre system.

“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” – The Sequel to 2007’s Blockbuster Hit
In the highly anticipated “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” debuting June 24, 2009, Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) again joins with the Autobots® against their sworn enemies, the Decepticons®.  Michael Bay directs from a screenplay written by Ehren Kruger & Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman.

DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures Present In Association with Hasbro A di Bonaventura Pictures Production A Tom DeSanto/Don Murphy Production A Michael Bay Film “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” starring Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson and John Turturro. LG Mobile Phones and BART Partner in E-Recycling Program

OAKLAND and SAN DIEGO, June 8, 2009 - LGE MobileComm U.S.A., (LG Mobile Phones) has joined forces with BART, of the San Francisco Bay Area, to redefine convenience in mobile device recycling.  Kicking off on June 8, LG is outfitting six BART stations with recycling receptacles, encouraging routine customers to drop off their mobile phones, chargers and accessories, from any manufacturer.  Commuters can also receive a prepaid mailer online or through “Txt to Recycle”, an additional component to LG’s green initiatives, and easily recycle their unused or old mobile phones. The program is one of many initiatives in LG’s ecoMobilization program to inspire people to make a difference.

As a leader in the mobile phone industry, LG has taken the initiative to educate on the benefits of mobile device recycling. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, only 10% of sold mobile phones get recycled and most people do not know where to recycle them.  To make the process as effortless as possible, LG is choosing high traffic areas to place receptacles and multiple ways to receive prepaid mailers including all supplies needed to return your mobile device.  To participate in the “Txt to Recycle” component of ecoMobilization, simply text “BART” to 57985, and when you receive a text back, reply with your mailing address for a postage-paid mailer to be sent to your front door.  You can also use your own packaging by printing a postage-paid label at www.ecoMobilize.com.

“It is our job to stay in tune and proactive as eco-insights develop,” said Ehtisham Rabbani, vice president of product strategy and marketing for LG Mobile Phones.  “Being eco-friendly doesn’t happen overnight.  This is a process LG is whole-heartedly committed to and with the expansion of ecoMobilization and partnerships such as ours with BART, we can already feel a difference.”

“As the issue of e-waste becomes an increasingly large problem, we are making it simple for you to make a difference,” BART Board President Thomas Blalock said.  “BART and LG are offering three easy ways for BART riders to get involved and dispose of their unused electronics in a free and responsible way: Riders can physically drop off old mobile phones, chargers and accessories at designated BART stations; text LG to receive a prepaid mailer or go online for a downloadable postage-paid label.”

Recycling receptacles can be found at the following stations:
Civic Center
Powell Street
Montgomery Street
Embarcadero
Oakland City Center/12 Street
Dublin/Pleasanton

This program runs through July 6, 2009.  For more information regarding LG ecoMobilization and its three pronged approach to motivate, educate and activate, please visit: www.ecoMobilize.com.

Quotable Quotes:
VIRTUAL INTERVIEWS FROM LG SUMMER LINE SHOW 2009

Mobile Communications

Jeff Hwang
President of LG MobileComm U.S.A., Inc.

“It's no secret that mobile phones have become more than just a communication device.  Think of what you never leave home without.  Most likely, you have your keys, your wallet and now, more than ever, your mobile phone.  Through consumer insights, LG has a view into what features and designs are desirable.”

“We don't build it in one size fits all.  Our lineup speaks to everyone.  Because we appreciate individuality, we are one of the leading mobile phone companies.  It is our unique product strategy, and 360-degree marketing approach that enriches the mobile phone experience.”

“In the nature of technology, the future of mobile phones is sure to impress.  And LG is at the forefront.”

Ehtisham Rabbani
Vice President, Strategy and Marketing
LG Mobile Phones USA

“Consumers are using their phones in new and novel ways.  In fact, a few years ago we identified the trend of text messaging.  And, based on that, we introduced a range of text messaging phones.  Today, we're the number one QWERTY handset supplier in the United States.”

“This has lined up nicely with consumer trends.  Look at a typical teenager. Today, they're receiving 1,700 text messages, and only about 230 voice calls.  Texting is more than just a form of communication.  It is truly a passion for most teenagers.”

“Understanding that passion resulted in us creating the LG national texting championship.  It’s vital to keep track of upcoming trends in the mobile space.  And the only way to do it is to constantly listen to your consumers and to your carrier partners.”
